Recommendations for location/hotel in Amsterdam...?

Hi!
I'm thinking about going to Amsterdam for a couple of days over Easter and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations - firstly on where would be a good location to stay, and secondly for a good hotel in that area. I won't have a car so will be relying on my legs and public transport (though not necessarily in that order! Very Happy) in order to get around - so would be good to be "in amongst" the sights if possible. I'm assumuning somewhere close to downtown would be best...?

Won't be on a total shoe string budget for the hotel, but obviously don't want to spend a fortune - location probably edges amenities on this occasion. Main things are clean, comfy, quiet and well located....bed and breakfast would be preferred but not essential.
